Kentucky’s Student Success Education Efforts Pay Off

Kentucky is and has been one of the states with the lowest rates of education across the board. The downsides of this on an individual and state wide level are notable. Graduates with a bachelor’s degree are more financially secure, rely less on social services, and earn more on average. Kentucky took note of this and started a student success program to reach a 60% postsecondary education rate by 2030.

In the five years since this goal was set, Kentucky has made massive educational strides. Not only was there an overall 4.8% increase in postsecondary education, but specific groups have specifically benefited. Underrepresented minorities, for example, have seen a 34% increase in degrees and postsecondary credentials. The enrollment rates for these minorities have followed a similar trend as well.

All in all Kentucky is on pace to reach their goal by 2030. The real issue is what lies beyond the achievement of this goal. While a 60% postsecondary education rate is great, different groups are being affected very differently. For instance, undergraduate enrollment for low income students is down 41% in the past decade. This drop is even worse for older adults looking to enter undergraduate institutions.

It’s challenges like these, and more complicated ones like the increasing cost of college, that will still need addressing. Kentucky’s efforts thus far have been focused largely on getting people to finish school. For instance, giving support to students struggling with basic needs is great for keeping people in school. The effect this has had on real students all throughout Kentucky is undeniable, but it’s just the beginning.
