How CAD Changed The World

Much has changed since the early days of blueprinting, which began with drawing boards, writing utensils, and physical tools used for design in business. However, in the 80s, digitized design became possible, allowing CAD software to find its footing and transform the design industry from the inside out. CAD, short for computer-aided design, is software used to digitally mock-up products or architectural plans for easier implementation in real life. By the 90s, CAD was available on a traditional office-style desk printer. Although the price for the technology remained steep, these advancements became the foundation for our use of CAD today in modern design.

Now, designers can use CAD to make nearly anything. From large items like industrial equipment or submarines, to smaller feats like dumbbells, there is no limit to what can be conceptualized using CAD. Because of this, CAD has become more than a software, fostering a community of enthusiasts and experts alike that often gather at conventions to discuss the impact and future of the technology. As the golden age of design continues to unfold through 2025, experts expect to see integration of AI and CAD software to offer a state of the art digital design companion to users. With these new developments, there is no limit to the capabilities of both professional and recreational CAD users across the globe.
