legalization of Marijuana

How Marijuana Perception Has Rapidly Changed

In 2025, marijuana acceptance is at a much higher point than ever. Back in 1969, it is estimated that only 12% of individuals supported the legalization of Marijuana, while that number skyrocketed to 70% in 2023. Furthermore, this legalization has been passed in 25 out of 50 states and affects more than half of the U.S. population. While it is fully legalized in major states like New York and California, it is still medically available in other states like Florida and Texas. So, what does the surge in legal marijuana usage mean for the workplace?

Firstly, you have to determine how rampant it is. Only 11% of employees in the US admit to using cannabis, and only 39% of that subset uses marijuana on a weekly basis. Furthermore, 73% say that being high improves their productivity and overall performance at work. In turn, this has caused just under half of all employers to stop testing for cannabis during the pre-hire process. Moreover, states such as Nevada, New York, and Washington D.C. have passed legislation to prohibit the pre-employment screening for marijuana.

Whether you’re in a state where it’s medicinal or fully legalized, one thing is certain. You can expect the winds of change to bring about more marijuana acceptance in the near future.
